IT cost optimisation

IT costs are usually reduced when the pressure is high. Blanket cost-cutting is risky because it jeopardises the future viability of an organisation. Systematic IT cost optimisation, which also takes the business strategy into account, makes more sense.

IT costs are made up of many factors: In addition to unit prices, drivers include complexity, quality, service level and volume. These include the number of operating systems, system availability, uptime and calls per month. However, simple answers are not enough to strategically optimise IT costs.

Which IT costs can be optimised?

With its central consulting practice, Metrics has been supporting organisations with IT cost optimisation for over 20 years. With extensive experience and current comparative figures, we can demonstrate in all technical areas where IT cost optimisation is possible, to what extent it makes sense and how great the anticipated effect will be.

  • Application costs
  • Operating costs
  • Daily Rates (Ratecards)
  • Sourcing costs
  • Litigation costs
  • Cost structures

Pure cost-cutting initiatives without a specific focus do not lead to sustainable results. Instead of focussing only on obvious savings potential, the strategic orientation of IT must be taken into account. Our experience: An integrative project approach that incorporates the strategy can achieve better results in IT cost optimisation and effectively increase IT efficiency.

How does IT cost optimisation work?

Without a baseline, it is not possible to demonstrate success in reducing costs. You should also be aware that the list of cost levers and potentials will always end up being smaller than expected. And finally, a number of measures initially require an investment. The framework conditions therefore result in four target areas for IT cost optimisation initiatives:

Quick Wins - mostly desired, but sometimes overestimated,

Costly Wins - run in the short term, but require a high investment,

Long Runner - take time, but require a lower investment and

Hard to get – require time and money.
